In Japan the eating of natto is widely believed to be beneficial to health. Each day more and more of these health benefits are being confirmed by the findings of medical researchers.

This had lead Honda Trading a division of the Honda Motor Corporation of Japan, to invest in the production and study of natto and natto products as a natural remedy for a number of medical conditions.

Nattokinase, an enzyme present in natto, may be the most exciting new  development to help prevent cardiovascular related diseases. Cardiovascular disease accounts for four out of every ten deaths. A heart attack or angina  episode can occur when a blood clot (or thrombus) blocks an artery and reduces the supply of oxygen to the heart muscle. A stroke occurs when a clot travels to the brain, where it then blocks a blood vessel.

Each year in Britain alone, around 250,000 people suffer from heart attacks and 125,000 die from coronary artery disease.

 

Nattokinase may reduce blood clotting both by direct fibrinolysis of clots, and inhibition of the plasma protein plasminogen activator inhibitor. This may help to avoid thrombosis as for example in heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, or strokes.

Studies have shown that it is plausible to assume that nattokinase might reduce blood clots in humans. Although only limited clinical trials have been conducted the results have been encouraging.
